8 Steps to Achieving Any Goal You Desire
Have you ever set a goal to start on Monday and have the motivation fizzle out by Friday? Do you want to change this? As a life and fitness transformation coach this is what I help people do. Take a look at the following 8 steps and make sure they are at the top of your to-do-list, regardless of the goal.
1. Clarify your goals.
Take the time to figure out exactly what you want and why (#2). If you don't know exactly what you want, you'll feel less sure and less likely to take the steps to get there. Create a dream board that helps you visualize what you want AND write down what you desire. Be as specific as you can without stressing yourself out.
2. Know your why.
Why do you want it. For example, weight loss isn't just about losing weight - it's the feeling(s) you'll have when you get there. More energy, confidence, better health, etc. Clearly define the real why behind what you want.
3. Find the balance between optimism and realism.
You want to lose weight, but losing 20lbs in a month is virtually impossible (as well as incredibly unhealthy), so dream big AND provide yourself the time and space to get there. Set a goal that's high enough for you to stretch, but not so high you feel defeated before you even start. In addition, set milestones that are achievable along the path to your larger goal.
4. Give yourself time.
Like the what and why...define your when. Again, be practical but don't be noncommittal. Saying I want to lose 10lbs over the next 5 months so that I will look and feel better is a much different than saying next year, I want to lose 10lbs.
5. Measure your progress.
Use whatever is practical to measure your progress towards your goals. Measuring your progress is not about beating yourself up because you didn't hit a milestone - it's about 1) identifying what's working and not working (keep doing the things that work) and 2) celebrating the victories along the way.
6. Make an accountability plan.
Make a plan...starting with what you know. You may not know all of the steps to get to where you want to go, but you can take the next logical step. Hold yourself accountable to that step. Perhaps it's taking a 30 min walk daily. Schedule it and make sure it happens.
7. Set yourself up to win.
There are some things we know will help us move towards our goals. It could be something as simple as setting our clothes out for the next day. Or taking 10 minutes to pack a lunch. Focus on doing the behaviors that serve you - not on not doing the behaviors that don't...make sense?.
8. Celebrate with fun.
Celebrate and have fun. Celebrate all of the little victories. Acknowledge yourself when you see new habits taking root and plan celebrations when you hit milestones. Make the bigger celebrations fun and meaningful. You're worth it!
