The Brain is the big boss - like a busy city. Each part has different functions and is made up of different types of cells. To work, different parts of the brain need to send messages to each other, and to other parts of the body. To keep your body healthy you must keep your brain healthy. Here are 5 things you should do to keep your brain healthy.
1. Keep your brain well hydrated!
The majority of the brain (almost 80%) is made up of water. When the brain doesn’t receive enough water, many negative effects can result, such as concentration and memory problems, brain fatigue and brain fog, headaches or sleep issues.
Deep breathing affects levels of noradrenaline, a natural brain chemical messenger. Noradrenaline enhances attention to details and improves overall brain health by promoting the growth of new neural connections.
3. Be active!
Many studies have suggested that the parts of the brain that control thinking and memory (the prefrontal cortex and medial cortex) have greater volume in people who exercise versus people who don’t. A person who keeps physically active is less at risk of developing Alzheimer’s and related diseases.
4. Carbs are not an enemy!
The diet plays a major role in the health of the brain, as the brain is the greatest glucose consumer in our body. To ensure that you are feeding your brain what it needs most, include a healthy dose of complex carbohydrates in your daily intake.
5. Take care of your mental state!
Yoga, meditation and positive thinking are all beneficial mental exercises to help us remain active and to keep on enjoying life. Yoga and meditation decrease stress, depression and anxiety while increasing happiness and the overall quality of life, while repetitive positive thoughts and positive activity can rewire your brain and strengthen brain areas that stimulate positive feelings.
