You know how it goes… You skip a workout and then something at work comes up and you have to reschedule your Wednesday night run. Somehow, before you know it, you haven’t worked out in several weeks. So you get inspired to start fresh. You plan a new workout routine, and you are really going to stick to it this time. Really… Well, maybe.
If this sounds like you, you may want to consider enlisting the support of a friend, a “workout” buddy. Ideally, find a friend who shares your workout interests, is at your fitness level (or a little higher), and can coordinate their schedule with yours. You can certainly have more than one workout buddy. Perhaps you have a yoga buddy, a spin class buddy, and walking buddy. That’s great! Just make a reasonable plan with each friend and stick to it. Motivate each other.
Here is what a workout buddy can do for you:
• Motivate you to show up for your workout and push you to workout harder or longer
• Give you someone to chat with during workouts, making them go by more quickly
• Improve your mood during workouts, making you more likely to stick to them
• Make you safer than if you’re running, walking, biking, or strength-training alone
So before you let another workout plan go bust, go on and commit to a plan with a friend. You may just find the motivation you need to stick with it this time. And you will likely have a lot of fun!
